Learning to NOT get entangled in negative thoughts creates more calm as well as feelings of contentment. We have heard the phrase “mindfulness” ; it is pausing – taking the time you need to recognize your thoughts for what they are…yet not getting caught up in them. That’s the key. Thoughts come and go, just pausing, noticing the mental state, bringing your attention back to the now using your breathing especially when meditating. The breath is so grounding. It is interesting that so many people don’t even realize they are holding their breath or breathing shallow breaths. Learning and using 7/11 breathing or yoga breathing is essential in bringing your attention back to the now rather than jumping from one thought to another often creating chaos, anxiety and disruptions in your mind.
The goal is to be motivated to observe your mind in a different way; work towards observing without analyzing or judging, therefore approaching your thoughts with a natural and accepting sense of curiosity. This kind of observation is effortless. Bringing forth that quality to watch the mind in this way allows you to resist clinging to emotions in the same way. to everything has a beginning and an end. This experience can bring a realization that there is no need to cling or resist emotions in the same way. Your thoughts are merely present for a few moments and within minutes they disappear. There is nothing tangible to hold on to and realizing that in and of itself can be freeing. Seeing this first hand enables you to understand where other people are coming from, hopefully allowing you to relate to others in a less critical and judgmental way. After all, we are all in this together.
The more resources we learn allowing for a more consistently healthy relationship with ourselves and others, the better chance we have in living and sharing a meaningful, comfortable and fulfilling life in the here and now.
