Hypnosis for Phobias and Fears

What are Phobias?

Many Americans struggle with irrational fears or phobias. The percentage of people with anxiety disorders has been on rise in recent years, and continues to grow according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
Phobias are the types of fears where a person harnesses irrational panic in something that poses little or no danger. These reactions are often referred to as fears and phobias but we often use the term phobia with our clients to ease understanding.

Phobias often develop during childhood and become more severe during adulthood (although phobia can develop during adulthood as well). People often struggle with phobias for decades without knowing that hypnosis can easily treat them. Phobias can be characterized by unreasonably exaggerated fear; our patients with phobias often feel as if they have no control over their feelings of panic even if they know that their phobias are irrational.

Hypnotherapy for phobias operates by accessing the subconscious mind, where deep-seated beliefs and memories reside. We often find that our clients construct their lives around their phobias. When left untreated, phobias can incapacitate the victim in situations that cause fear.

*Individual results may vary; since every person is different some issues are resolved more quickly in some individuals than others.

Types of Phobias

We can characterize phobias according to these four general categories:
1. Natural environment—fear of heights, darkness, water, storms, etc.
2. Animals—fear of snakes, dogs, frogs, bugs, etc.
3. Blood injection injury—fear of injury, blood, injections, etc.
4. Situational—fear of flying, dentists, driving, public speaking, etc.
Regardless of the type of phobia, they are formed the same way subconsciously and manifest in similar ways. One can think of phobias as “mis-wiring” two unrelated things together resulting in the fallacious association between the object and the feeling.

Symptoms of Phobias

Following are the common symptoms of Fears and phobias

  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Racing heart
  • Blushing
  • Palpitations
  • Difficulty speaking

How Hypnosis Relieves Phobias

You probably already know that you experience hypnosis often when you’re in a relaxed state of mind. That focused state of relaxation you experience when you watch a movie or go for a long drive are examples of hypnosis. It is during this time that you are most susceptible to suggestions. Hypnotherapy for fear helps you overcome fear by reprogramming your reaction to situations that trigger fear. The techniques used by hypnotherapists vary from patient to patient, but hypnotherapists have the same goal: to detach the stimulus from the emotional response. Hypnotherapists will also teach their patients relaxation and visualization techniques to stay calm and relaxed.
